The Durban Actors Studio Speech and Drama programme, InterAct, develops creativity, confidence, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.   The InterAct syllabus is designed around various learning objectives as set in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) Performance and Communication programme, which is an internationally recognised and approved syllabus.

Term on term, year on year we deliver a diverse arts education programme which provides for personal and social skills upliftment, progressive performance development and the ability to identify students who can advance performance training on a more “serious” level.

In a nutshell, our classes provide an educational and life-enriching experience; a safe place to theatrically play, learn and grow in.

Our Mini class is a nurturing environment that gives each child the opportunity to grow in confidence. During our Mini class, students find new ways to express themselves, playing with actions, feelings and words – we develop varied, age-appropriate, skills, imparted through a creative and fun environment – the best way to learn!

Our Junior students start to explore the world of “staged” performance. They are introduced to various fun activities which impart a solid grounding regarding the understanding of how ones voice and body can be utilised to shape and present a character.  They are taught story telling, improvisation and scene work in order to give them the basic skills needed to take ideas from page to stage.  Whilst we ensure a core skill is developed each term, we are aware drama must be an escape; a chance to let the academic mind rest and engage in creative play.

Our Senior students explore dramatic ideas, themes, genres, characters and stories through exercises that challenge imagination and creativity.  They fine-tune their understanding of character development, storytelling, improvisation and communication skills whilst gaining a solid appreciation for live performance. This class is about giving every high school learner a chance, once a week, to engage in creative play, a chance to let their academic mind rest whilst they nurture new and long-term friendships grounded in a  love of theatre and performance.

Should the student be over 16 they can attend our adult acting class, Impulse. Read more about Impulse here.

Placement of a Grade 7 learner in a Senior class will be considered after we have evaluated their work in a Junior Class.
